Just Like Jabez

by patrickandcarol, August 31, 2007
God, I’m a grateful mother who You have blessed indeed
Then enlarged my borders and shown me the obvious need
Of those near and far from my own comfortable place of birth
Who live in such apparent lack on their portion of the earth

My needs are all met and I live in the fullness of life
While close by me many others know only trouble and strife
It's because to my father and mother I was born in a land far away
And heard of Your love and grace given freely without need to repay

You keep me safe and secure from all threat of harm and fear
While close to me a mother cries nightly her every tear
While I sleep in peace and comfort another mother lying near by
Is sadly sobbing her heart out with many a deep, long sigh

And now that I live out of the abundance of what I’ve got
I pray I may always give to those around me who have not
Moved with deep compassion for those You’ve revealed to me
I pray for a revelation for those who do not yet see You as I see

Stay close to her Lord, until she hears about Your love and grace
From someone filled with Your compassion who daily runs their race
And joyfully shares the very reality that You are all they’ll ever need
So just like Jabez she can pray, Lord bless me indeed.

Happy Village

by patrickandcarol, August 31, 2007
Sam and Pastor Sara escorted us to 'Happy Village' to introduce us to the people. What a precious bunch of people!

Everyone at 'Happy Village' is awaiting eviction orders, as the property boom continues and new apartments close in around them.

If you feel touched by the plight of these people and would like to make a contribution, please don't hesitate to contact us.

null

This little guys need was easy to meet - all he wanted was a cuddle. I thought he was never going to let me go!

null

While I took my time on the bridges, the little kids ran across them with ease!

null

They didn't have much, but the kids had a Bible.

null

null

Pastor obviously enjoys spending time with his flock.

null

It was all 'happening' at 'Happy Village'.

This is the way we wash our hair...

null

... this is the way we rinse our hair!

null

null

The lady on the right had recently been struck by lightning and is still recovering.

null

This young boy was not at all well.

null

One lady was very excited as she delivered the piglets.

null

This lady is exploited by a company she sews for, so now that I have met her, I will do something about that.

null

These kids were preparing a meal.

null

Sam built some of the houses and bridges at 'Happy Village'.

null

This baby was very cute!

We are looking forward to being on the team. What a privilege!

Vancouver BC

by patrickandcarol, August 29, 2007
What a privilege it was to travel to BC with Linda! I had wanted to accompany Linda on one of her trips since I first met her, so I was delighted to receive an invitation.

null

It was great to have the opportunity to take 'Kellys' in Cambodia' to Vancouver and to meet with Missions Directors, Church Pastors and to share with members of the congregations.

It was also wonderful to meet new friends and to get reacquainted with some 'old ones'. Each of our hosts were most welcoming!

Prayer Requests

by patrickandcarol, August 29, 2007
The following information is from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Travel Advice for Cambodia website.

Exercise Caution

This advice has been reviewed and reissued. It contains new information in the Summary and Civil Unrest/Political Tension (update). The overall level of the advice has not changed.

Summary

We advise you to exercise caution and monitor developments that might affect your safety in Cambodia because of the risk of civil unrest, violent criminal activity and terrorism.

On 29 July 2007, a bomb exploded in front of the Cambodian/Vietnamese Friendship Monument in the Duan Penh district of Phnom Penh – two other devices failed to explode. While no-one has claimed responsibility, further attacks cannot be ruled out.

Pay close attention to your personal security and monitor the media for information about possible new safety or security risks.

You should avoid protests, demonstrations and political gatherings as they may turn violent.

In the past year there have been human cases of avian influenza in Cambodia. See the Health Issues section below for advice to Australians travelling to or resident in Cambodia.

Thank you

A Time For Goodbye

by patrickandcarol, August 17, 2007
It was time to join Mark and Jo for a special breakfast to farewell Charlie and Mary Ann as they prepared to leave Cambodia.

null

It has been great getting to know Charlie and Mary Ann and their children, and to work with them as they managed the JMM Festival of Fellowship.

Who knows where we will meet again?!

Love In Any Language

by patrickandcarol, August 15, 2007
Sophia speaks Spanish and since she arrived in Cambodia to serve as a missionary, she hasn't been able to communicate with many, if any, so it was lovely when Kerrie met Sophia and they had a least a little 'Spanish chat'.

Partnership

by patrickandcarol, August 15, 2007
The state or condition of being a partner, participation, association, joint interest, fellowship, brotherhood, togetherness and union.

Now that's a definition that sounds great!

We are delighted to have received an invitation to partner with Amy and Kerrie.

After a few discussions relating to the workings of the partnership, the Sewing Income Generation project has the privilege of exporting items to Australia, exclusively for the girls business.

null

null

null

null

Just prior to this, some of the project's items also went to South Africa. Now that's great and the ladies doing the sewing are excited!

Kay and Helen's Farewell

by patrickandcarol, August 13, 2007
Kay and Helen invited a number of the children from the orphanage out to the airport to say goodbye.

While the girls checked their luggage in, we treated the kids to an ice cream. Thanks, Tony!

Inspiration

by patrickandcarol, August 12, 2007
We are blessed to have great preaching from Pastor Jesse and awesome praise and worship from the team every week and you can guarantee that you will leave a service inspired when Michael Shepherd is preaching.

We look forward to Mike's return to Phnom Penh in December.

Finale!

by patrickandcarol, August 11, 2007
We were blessed to be among the group of people invited to a conference room at the Intercontinental, to close Hope Cambodia.

It was explained that among other things, going ahead with the Festival at the Olympic Stadium had become a security risk and there just wasn't enough time before the event to organise the required security.

We gave thanks as we listened to the report of the statistics relating to the various ministries conducted in Cambodia during the 30 Days of Hope. Darlene and Martin finished off the evening with a beautiful rendition of Amazing Grace.

null

It was great to have the Aussies in town.

null

The 'Perth Boys' - well at least they were before Nigel headed to Hillsong and Patrick to Phnom Penh.

It Goes On & On...

by patrickandcarol, August 11, 2007
We came home to take a break before the praise and worship Festival of Fellowship at the Olympic Stadium, while the organisers were down at the stadium setting up for tonights event. Then we received a call to say that the event was cancelled. Thousands were expected.

The government authorities in Cambodia are a breed all of their own. They're unique! Trust me, we know as we have the 'pleasure' of dealing with them on a regular basis.

As you can expect, the antics of the officials over the past few days have really cranked up the interest in Christianity.

It's hard to believe that after finally having all the necessary documenation approved and signed that this would still happen. But that is what happens when bureaucratic goverrnments are allowed to rule!

A Time For Goodbye

by patrickandcarol, August 11, 2007
It was time to say goodbye to the amazing Duinick family...

null

... as they left Phnom Penh to return home.

null

Dr. Mitch and Leah have coordinated and led the medical team for the past two weeks.

Only a few medical team members remain in the city with more departures scheduled for the next day or two.

It was such a privilege for us to be invited to Host the medical teams on the weekends during the 30 Days of Hope. So we thank Joyce Meyer Ministries for the awesome honour and privilege.

Conference - Day 3

by patrickandcarol, August 11, 2007
The program started early in the Compassion for Christ Church and included worship led by Darlene, Nigel on the guitar and Piseth singing in Khmer. What a sound!

null

null

Mike Shepherd and Joyce Meyer delivered great messages.

null

Joyce said that she had not experienced anything like what they had in Cambodia in 30+ years of ministry and that she had never climbed the fence to get into an event before.

A Night Of Worship With Delirious & Darlene Zschech

by patrickandcarol, August 10, 2007
It was a night of worship that many will not forget!

The authorities 'pulled the plug' on the generator and left everyone in Chenla Theatre in the dark and without sound. But that didn't stop the concert going ahead.

Martin got down from the stage and stood on a front row chair and played his acoustic guitar and led the crowd in worship. Soon after, Darlene and another guitarist joined him. Somebody handed Darlene a loud haler and the crowd sang one song after another. You couldn't see anything other than camera flashes and mobile phone lights, but you could hear the sweet sounds of a crowd who were not going home without having a night of worship.

null

Finally, we all left the theatre only to find a large crowd gathered outside, so the two groups combined and the worshipping continued.

Joyce Meyer was not at Chenla but had been told about the crowd that had gathered who were in no hurry to leave. Police had locked the gates and would not let people in or out of the complex grounds.

Soon after, Joyce Meyer arrived at the location and climbed over the fence of the complex and was ushered to the front steps where they called for an Interpreter who quickly joined her and she began preaching to the crowd through a loud haler. After the message the singing recommenced.

null

null

We wonder what tomorrow will bring!

Praise God For Sweet Victory

by patrickandcarol, August 10, 2007
We attended the Conference at the Compassion for Christ Church and were 'greeted' by Military Police (MP) the same way as we were 'farewelled' by MPs when we left Chenla Theatre after being advised that we had to vacate the premises half way through yesterdays program.

Delirious led the worship after devotions followed by great messages from Don Clowers and Joyce Meyer. Joyce Meyer mentioned in her message that she felt like the cloud in the wilderness moving from venue to venue, but where she went the people followed.

Just as Joyce Meyer was ready to finish off and leave the podium, Joyce's son, David, came on stage and whispered to her. Then there was great excitement at the announcement that the permission documents had been signed by the remaining bureaucratic stalling government offical signatory and permission granted in writing, to have the Conference at the Olympic Stadium. I guess they thought that because they didn't grant permission that the Conference would be cancelled. But that wasn't going to happen!

We may be two days into the 4 day Conference, having experienced changes of venues, schedules and cancellations, but the people will move to the Stadium when it's ready and the 30 Days of Hope - 'Hope Cambodia' - Saturday and Sunday evening programs will run as scheduled at the Olympic Stadium.

Blessed

by patrickandcarol, August 09, 2007
We were blessed when we had the opportunity to meet Dave and Joyce Meyer.

null

It was such a privilege and honour to meet them both as they play such a major role in our lives as mentors and teachers. We are extremely grateful for the many books and messages via podcasts which lead, inspire and encourage us everyday.

Hope Cambodia - 30 Days of Hope

by patrickandcarol, August 09, 2007
Hope Cambodia was to culminate with a 4 day conference at the Olympic Stadium here in Phnom Penh. A verbal permit had been given, however, the paper work has not been signed and therefore the conference had to be moved to another venue at the last minute.

The messages delivered by Jeff Perry ...

null

... and Joyce Meyer were great ...

null
... and the worship with Delirious, awesome!

null

null

It was a lovely touch when Martin invited the band members children to join him on stage.

null

We were advised at the end of the morning session that the conference could not continue at the venue and that we will be moving to a Church to continue the conference on Friday. The evening Praise and Worship was cancelled by the government.

Regardless of what the government do, and the law introduced last month, the Chrisitan movement in Cambodia is well underway and nothing will stop it now!

Our Adopted Orphanage

by patrickandcarol, August 06, 2007
After been invited to establish a local board for an existing orphanage in order to oversee its operations, equip and empower its people and increase its financial and material resources, it is great that we have been blessed with money to administer to a local orphanage.

We had great pleasure in delivering fans and rice on behalf of the donor and mats for the children to sleep on are currently being made.

null

The shop owner could not understand why we requested matching brand name on each of the fans. He could not see a problem having Sanyo and National brand stickers on the one fan.

null

null

null

Patrick got a work out when he carried the rice to an area for storage.

null

Bophal no longer has to be concerned about where the money to feed the kids will come from.

null

It will be great when we provide the most basic of physiological and safety/security needs. Then we can work on the other four levels of Maslow's Hierachy of Needs.

Teen Mania

Accounts

by patrickandcarol, August 06, 2007
It's time to finalise the hotel account for another week.

null

These guys are always ready to assist Dr. Patrick (yes, that is correct. Dr. Patrick. We have been registered as Doctors simply because we are registered with the medical team) or at times are happy to just let him have his own trolley so he can play 'Bellboy'.

null

Maybe I could get Patrick one of these uniforms. On second thoughts, maybe he would look better in a set of scrubs!

Sweet Victory

Well, Patrick may have had to wait until 12:30am to find out the result of the Derby, but he was pleased he stayed up to watch the ‘Sweet Victory’.

FREMANTLE 5.3 9.4 13.7 19.10 (124)

So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen...

by patrickandcarol, August 05, 2007
... goodbye....

They come and they go, but not before they touch and in turn are touched by the people.

null

It is amazing how quickly you feel connected to some people. No doubt it is the passion and purpose, that special gift that comes from serving Him.

null

Then there are those of us who will stay.

null

Nice Surprise

by patrickandcarol, August 04, 2007
After registering the last guest to arrive for the evening, we had a chance to chat with Pat and then discovered that Jim was back in town.

null

It was lovely to catch up with Pat and Jim together!

Serenade

by patrickandcarol, August 04, 2007
We were having a quiet dinner in the cafe, when some of the members of the group singing in the lounge came to the table and asked for a request. When we requested 'Amazing Grace' they told us that they would sing that later in the lounge. In the meantime we asked them to sing whatever song they would like to. Their selection - 'God Will Make A Way'. Absolutely!

null

Later, you could hear the sound of 'Amazing Grace' flowing from the lounge through the foyer. Very nice!

I love the latest movie rendition of the song and enjoyed the movie of a great man with a passion and purpose.

Hitting The Town

by patrickandcarol, August 04, 2007
The team gathered together before venturing out for dinner.

null

Now what van number was that, Katie?!

null

They have gathered from all over the world to bring hope to the Cambodian people.

null

null

Wonderful people serving together as part of Hope Cambodia!

They're Back!

by patrickandcarol, August 04, 2007
The medical team returned to Phnom Penh after another amazing week of treating people in the province.

null

As requested, Patrick gave the Travel Agent a quick call to check on flight availability to Siem Reap.

null

By 1:45PM we finally had everyone that needed a room, in one. That was late compared with the previous 3 weeks.

Now it's time to wait for the latest additional team members flights. Those 'pending arrivees' will join the team for the last week of Hope Cambodia's medical clinics.

The First School Year...

by patrickandcarol, August 03, 2007
... has ended for these little ones, but soon they will be 'gaining an edge' for next year when they start studying for the next grade at the centre.

null

null

They are so cute!

The Roads

by patrickandcarol, August 02, 2007
The dirt roads are full of pot holes and it can take up to twice as long to reach your destination. Add a heavy downpour to that and it can take you a whole lot longer.

null

null

Regardless of where you travel in Cambodia, you must travel faster to get out of the rain. Right?! Well, that is what the Khmer people think. Unlike back home where we slow down to adjust to the adverse conditions.

For Some...

by patrickandcarol, August 02, 2007
... it was time to line up.

null

While for others, it was time for 'structured play'.

null

For this little man, it was time for an interview...

null

... and story time for others.

null

With more than 260+ children attending the Transform Cambodia centres and 19 permanent team members and additional volunteer team members, there's never a shortage of discussions, home visits, meetings and interviews to conduct.

A City On The Move

by patrickandcarol, August 02, 2007
Phnom Penh is a city on the move, which is great! However, this is pushing rents through the roof.

Some of our friends have received notice of a 100% rent increase. Prior to this news they were struggling to pay their bills and feed their family.

The sad reality is that more and more kids are being forced to work at an early age and education is no longer an option for them.

What Does The Future Hold...

by patrickandcarol, August 01, 2007
... for this young guy and many more like him?!

For many children it is simply a classic case of not fitting the criteria of organisations working with children.

null

Rain Threatened...

by patrickandcarol, August 01, 2007
... and the wind blew, but that didn't stop the kids coming to their evening session of English in the Courtyard.

It meant that we had to arrange the tables and chairs in a corner out of the wind, and they had to hang on to their handouts, but that didn't stop them enjoying their lesson.

null

null

So You Mean I Could Study...

by patrickandcarol, August 01, 2007
... and get assistance?!

null

This team member has a desire to be a teacher at Transform in the future, but understands that she needs to be able to speak English in order to do so. When she discovered that Study Assistance was available, she got so excited and told me that she was going back to school. This will take her another step closer to achieving her hearts desire.

null

Can I Be A Volunteer?

by patrickandcarol, August 01, 2007
Like the old saying goes - Build it and they will come.

It's great to have a good team of committed volunteers on hand to assist the teachers with the daily schedule, so we were pleased to interview two more at Centre 3.

null

Gaining An Edge

by patrickandcarol, August 01, 2007
The children at Transform Cambodia's Centre 2 & 3 will commence their first year at school in October when the new school year commences.

In the meantime, we are ensuring that they are 'gaining an edge' as we run a full program to prepare them.
